Why consider private gifted testing?

Please note that your child may be evaluated at no charge through the public school system if he or she meets certain criteria on screenings administered at school. However, parents may wish to seek out private gifted testing for a number of reasons. A primary advantage is that it may offer the opportunity to have your child evaluated with little wait time. Another benefit is that we will schedule the testing at a day and time of your choice. Because you will know when the testing is taking place, you can ensure that your child has had a good night's sleep and a good breakfast to maximize attention, effort, and persistence.

What does testing involve?

1. Free consultation: We will start with a free telephone consultation so we can discuss whether gifted testing may be a good fit for your child. If your child has already been screened or evaluated, please be sure to share these results because the same test cannot be administered twice within 12 months.

2. Individually administered IQ test: The IQ test will provide a measure of your child's concept development, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. Domains assessed may vary depending upon the assessment, but typically include measures of verbal reasoning, nonverbal problem solving, and memory. Scores provide an indication of overall rate of learning, as well as relative strengths and weaknesses in more specific areas of ability. Administration time varies depending upon the test and child, but typically takes between 1 and 2 hours.

3. Review of results: We will discuss the results of your child's evaluation by phone, and I will provide you with a written report within 5 business days.

What should I know about submitting my child's report to the school?

Typically an IQ of 130 or better, which equals or exceeds 98% of same age-peers, is needed to be eligible for gifted programming. Gifted eligibility in the school system also involves other criteria, including evidence of traits of gifted learners as measured by teacher rating scales, as well as a committee determination that your child has a need for gifted programming. Public schools may consider results of private evaluations and use them for eligibility determination at their discretion. However, at times they may choose to do their own testing.

How much does it cost?

Please contact me for a free consultation prior to scheduling testing. The current fee for the individually administered IQ test and written report is $400.
